What is a Ghost?

A ghost or apparition is usually referred to as the images, sounds, or presence of some part of a person that has survived the death of a body. Most people refer to a ghost as any unusual or "paranormal" activity, especially movement of objects directly or indirectly seen. Feeling the presence of someone is the most commonly reported ghost experience ,as well as the actual visual image. Hearing voices or other sounds and smelling certain odors are also reported in ghost encounters.

A ghost or recorded image?

Sometimes, the activity experienced may not be a ghost , but actually emotions "recorded" in the walls and objects of the house that is haunted. These emotional "vibrations" cause activity that resemble ghost activity, but are not actually discarnate entities. In some haunted house investigations the only ghost activity present is the "ghost" of emotions.

PoltergeistsPoltergeist is a word that means "noisy ghost." A poltergeist is usually referred to as any ghost activity involving physical movement or disturbances caused by unseen agents. Typical poltergeist activity is when objects such as pictures, dolls, kitchen utensils, and furniture are moved across a room or are flung through the air by some unknown force. These disturbances may be accompanied by lights going on or off and by unusual wrapping sounds. Before the twentieth century, poltergeists were considered evil or mischievous "spirits of the dead."

However, more recent investigations of these "poltergeist" hauntings have revealed human agents as the cause of the paranormal activity. Energy produced by a living person or persons produces the movement of objects, not ghosts. This energy is also called psychokinetic energy and it is produced by the mind and subconscious thoughts of a living person. To have poltergeist activity there must be a poltergeist agent. Strong emotional energy causing poltergeist activity usually emanates from the emotions of someone going through the breakup of a long-term relationship such as in divorce, or from debilitating fears, grief, and/or depression.

Why do Ghosts Haunt?

The most commonly reported reason for a haunting is the spirit’s degree of attachment to the physical world. A discarnate entity can be so attached to an earthly possession or person that it does not want to leave the earth plane. The emotional bond may be so strong to a former dwelling or loved one that the spirit refuses to move into the light.

Material possessions may have been very important to a person in his or her physical life without having any regard for spirituality. Holding onto those physical possessions may still be the driving force in the next dimension; thus contributing to the spirit condition we call haunting. It is more difficult for some people to let go of attachments. This difficulty is carried over into the spirit world. The excessive attachment to the material world may interfere with the spirit making a smooth transition to the light.

The need to communicate a message or the need of the discarnate entity to be aware of the spirit’s family on earth adjusting to its death may keep the spirit earth bound. Once the spirit acknowledges that the family is adjusting to the new conditions, the spirit will move on to the light but will then have the ability to check in on loved ones. Once in the light, the spirit may also have the ability to help loved ones on the earth

A discarnate entity may stay earth bound and become part of the haunting phenomenon because it is confused by its non-physical condition. Confusion occurs because the person was not prepared to make the transition.

The most common reason for not being prepared for the transition is sudden death. Sudden death would include tragic accidental deaths like car accidents, murders or sudden illness with a short period of knowledge or no knowledge as well as some suicides. The real purpose for illness is to prepare a person for transition. Illness is not a punishment, but a process to help make us make a smooth transition to the next dimension.

Is there a difference between a ghost and a spirit?

Fifteen years ago, when I first started exploring the paranormal, the term ghost was frequently used in describing haunted places or encounters. Today the terms ghost, spirit, apparition, or discarnate entities are all used interchangeably. However, the term "spirit" is considered more user friendly because it creates a more benevolent, friendly description of the phenomenon. In contrast, the term "ghost" may elicit a more frightening reaction in a person. So the psychic or medium may use either and still be correct. The term "ghost" or "apparition" is used more to describe phenomenon in haunted dwellings whereas "spirit" is popularly used for deceased loved ones or communication with someone deceased. However, the term "ghost" sometimes makes a more dramatic statement and is immediately recognized as synonymous with a haunting. Imagine yourself face-to-face with an apparition. What images come to mind when you think of seeing a ghost? Do you think of white-sheeted beings or cloudy figures standing in front of you? Maybe you think of frighteningly grotesque images of faces. Perhaps you have already seen a ghost, but you do not know you have seen one.Ghosts do not look like cloudy white figures. They look like real people. Sometimes, they may appear as sort of an out of-focus image or as a slightly transparent figure, but most apparitions look like you and me. In some encounters, you may not even be aware that you are looking at a ghost, unless the figure suddenly vanishes.

Most apparitions are described as being "real" or "solid" and are seen wearing clothing. They are often heard and can sometimes be touched and smelled as with any "real" living person. They are often seen by more than one person at a time and can be seen from different angles. One person may see the figure from the front and another person may see it from the rear. The ghost may behave in the setting as would any person who was physically there. A ghost may suddenly appear and disappear and may even glow in the dark. Ghosts may pass through walls and other solid objects or appear to be floating in the air. Ghosts may communicate ideas with words, gestures, or other symbols telepathically. Although the age and physical appearance of a ghost may change from time to time, they never shrink or grow.

Types of Ghosts

There are three classifications of apparitions. The "apparitions of the dead" are figures looking and acting like recognizable personalities who have been dead for a while. The second class, called "crisis apparition", generally relates to a crisis in which the person represented by the apparition finds himself in a dangerous situation or in the process of dying. The last type is called the "apparitions of the living," in which an apparition seen at one location represents a living person that is actually somewhere else.

Apparitions of the Dead

"Apparitions of the long dead," thus called the post mortem type, vary in the length of time that the person has been deceased. If the ghost is attached to the person, moving from the location of the haunting will not stop the activity. In this type of haunting the ghosts may appear in different clothing and at different ages. It is usually centered in one location but may be seen throughout the house in several areas and to several people. It may also communicate using touch, sound or through smell.

Crisis Apparition

"Crisis Apparitions" or "Apparitions of the recently deceased" are the most common experiences. You may have seen an apparition of someone you knew or dreamed of that person and this experience left you with the feeling that something had happened to them. Then you find out later that the person had indeed died. These experiences usually occur within 12 to 24 hours of the actual death.

Apparitions of the Living

Apparitions of the living may be spontaneous as in an out-of-body experience or deliberate as in the case of a child trying to let their mother know she is seriously hurt. In some out of body experiences a person may simply be looking down at his or her body or be in another location being seen. Alex Tanous, a well-known and exceptionally gifted psychic, could bi-locate which means he had the ability to be in two locations at once. I have had the pleasure of talking to him as well as receiving a personal reading on a cruise a few years before he died.

How to Deal with a Ghost Encounter

Your reaction to the ghost is the essential factor in determining whether the haunting experience is pleasant or frightening. In fact your emotional reaction to the entity can actually cause the discarnate energy to remain at your home. Strong emotions produce energy which will cause the spirit to continue manifesting. If you stay calm, you will gain control of your haunting situation.

Haunting situations reported in the media are usually depicted as frightening. In reality there are very few so-called evil spirits. Defining a spirit as evil is a matter of perception. If you encounter a ghost and you run, trip and injure yourself, you are likely to blame the spirit for your injury, thus perceiving the ghost as harmful. In reality it was your fear that caused the harm. If you feel pressure on your body while walking into a spirit energy field, you are likely to conclude the spirit blocked you from entering a room. If you feel pressure while you are lying in bed in a prone position, you are likely to conclude that the spirit was trying to hold you down. These experiences could influence you to perceive that the encounter was with an evil ghost.

Try to communicate with the ghost

All of us have the ability to be intuitive. Some of us pay attention to it and trust it, while others simply ignore it or dismiss it as impossible. To attempt intuitive communication with a spirit you need to quiet yourself, preferably when there are no outside distractions. Relax....... Take a deep breath..... Mentally ask the spirit who it is or why it is there. Do not expect to receive a direct answer as you would talking to someone who is physically present. It is best to mentally repeat the phrase as though it was mantra during a meditation exercise. Stay quiet and mentally listen for any thoughts that pop into your mind. Do not analyze the thoughts. Simply remember and record. Repeat the communication attempts at various times. Then check to see if any thoughts are repeated. Repetition of the thoughts at various times could offer the clues to determine the purpose of the haunting or who is haunting.

Keep a Diary of experiences

Describe the types of activities that are occurring. Is the activity occurring around one particular person or several? Check for a pattern of the disturbances that affect objects or people around you. What are the locations of the disturbances? Have you noticed any particular times for the spirit activity? Who are the people having the activity? Are the disturbances frequent or infrequent?  Have you looked for any tangible or ordinary explanation for the disturbance?  Has there been any activity when no one was home? Describe the emotional feeling that relates to the ghost or its possible intent.

How to release a ghost from your home

Command the spirit to leave the dwelling in an assertive but caring manner. Tell it go to the light because it does not belong in the physical world anymore. It is wise to deal with a ghost in a loving manner because that discarnate entity could be confused or even a deceased loved oneUsually, a spirit will not continue to manifest if you are frightened. Telling it to leave will usually stop the manifestation. The spirit may still be present but it will not physically manifest. Commanding it to leave also creates a break in your concentration which suspends the psychic experience. If you are attempting communication with the spirit, do not be frightened or you will not succeed.

Clear the energy of the spirit by cleansing the rooms in the haunted dwelling. Sea salt or Kosher salt should be placed in the four outside corners of the inside of the house. Just A pinch of the salt in the corners is necessary. If there is a room in the house that has more activity than the other rooms, then put a pinch of salt in all the corners of that particular room. If there is any negative energy, the sea salt will help to neutralize and disperse the energy.  In theory, the energy perceived as negative may be fragmented energy. By cleansing we may actually be gathering the dispersed energy and making it whole in order to release it to the light.

If the spirit energy is concentrated in the bedroom and there are complaints of feeling pressure while you are reposed in your bed, then an additional method should be included in the spirit cleansing ritual. Fill a pan with water and place it under your bed. Leave it in place until you awake in the morning. Then dispose of the water in the toilet taking care not to spill it. Spirits are attracted to water. So the water-filled pan will attract and then trap the spirit in the contained area of water to be released and disposed. Sometimes there are fragments of energy that need to be gathered first in order to release the spirit. Communication or recognition of the spirit condition would be impossible if the energy was not whole.

Locate a reputable psychic, if the spirit activity continues after trying the previous techniques. Contact a parapsychological organization or another reputable organization for the name of a psychic. Keep in mind that NO psychic can guarantee the removal of a spirit, therefore charging a hefty fee for the service should be viewed with caution. A higher price in the paranormal field does not indicate greater talent.  The fee for a ghost investigation should be no more than the cost of a psychic reading plus travel expenses. Being at the right place at the right time under certain conditions is the key to communicating or releasing the spirit.

How we interfere with the soul’s advancement into the light.

The bereaved can actually contribute to a deceased loved one’s confusion in the spirit plane. Investigations have revealed incidents of spirit activity due to the emotions of the living. The most frequent way the living prevents a spirit from reaching the light is through excessive mourning. Which is defined as frequent crying, inability to accept the death, staying in the home and never trying to go on living. The heavy, emotional, physical energy could pull the deceased loved one away from the light. The spirit could stay between the two worlds never proceeding towards "GOD." Not being in the physical world and not being fully in the spirit dimension could be considered a state similar to what some religions call "purgatory." The soul would then be a lost soul without direction or spiritual peace.

The second condition that could interfere with a soul’s advancement to the light is the family survivors trying to live as though the deceased person was still alive. Refusing to discard the deceased person’s medicines, used toothbrushes, shaving equipment, and other personal toiletries is one way a person may hold onto the spirit of their loved one. The deceased person’s clothes and other articles no longer used should also be discarded. Keeping all momentos is fine but holding onto articles just to hold onto the memory of the deceased can also be dangerous to the spirit’s journey to the light.

Displaying an excessive amount of pictures of the deceased person in prominent places, is another way the living can stop the spirit from advancing to God. Especially if they were not displayed when he or she was in the physical or when a "personal shrine" for the deceased loved one was created.

During a séance the spirit of a woman killed in an automobile accident conveyed her confusion to me. I learned her mother had erected a shrine in her living room with twenty five pictures of her deceased daughter. Her mother lit several candles continuously at her living room shrine. To make matters worse the mother continued to set a place setting at the table for her deceased daughter. She never again entered the room that her daughter slept in by simply closing the door shut with everything the same.

From the spirit’s perspective the closed room being left exactly as it was when it was in the physical world would offer no clues to their death. The room would look the same, so the unchanged physical world could actually keep the loved one confused and away from the light. By changing the physical condition it he

Have you had a ghost encounter?

1.Have you ever sensed the presence of someone, but when you turned around, no one was there?

2. Have you ever felt a cold breeze suddenly surround you when there were no drafts evident, windows open or air conditioning turned on?

3. Have you ever heard the sounds of footsteps or a door opening or closing, but when you investigated no one was there?

4. Have you ever been in a room and suddenly you smell the whiff of perfume that you know was a deceased relative’s favorite, but there was no one in the room wearing that distinct smell?

5. Have you ever encountered a feeling of pressure on your body when no one was there?

6. Have you had trouble with electronic equipment? Are lights or electronic equipment being turned off and on when no one is visibly present?

7. Have you ever had a dream of a deceased relative that was so vivid it almost seemed as though that person was still alive and had just been there?

8. Have you noticed a pattern to the sounds you have heard or the figures you have seen?

9. If you have had any of these experiences, did they occur after an antique or garage sale purchase? Or have you recently remodeled your home?

10. Has your dog or cat looked at the ceiling or wall seemingly barking or meowing at someone, but no one was present?

If the answers to most of these questions are yes, then you more than likely have had some kind of ghost encounter.
