The Sea Holly Inn of Cape May Ghost Haunting Investigation with Jane Doherty

Haunted Inn ghost investigation with psychic Jane Doherty

The Sea Holly Inn is a haunted dwelling in Cape May, New Jersey that is open to the public as a Bed and Breakfast Inn. It is located near the shoreline at the most southern tip of New Jersey. The Cape May dwellings at one time were the summer vacation homes of the well-to-do families of Philadelphia and the Surrounding areas.

These Cape May Victorian houses are now Bed and Breakfast Inns that cater to tourists, especially during the summer season. Numerous activities year round highlight the magnificent Victorian décor of these restored mansions. Visiting Cape May is like stepping back in time. Many of these restored mansions are also haunted.

Unusual phenomena at the Sea Holly Inn prompted owner, Christy Igoe, to call Jane Doherty for her expertise to explain the strange manifestations at the inn. Pictures taken at the inn of a bride on the landing of the staircase during her wedding ceremony revealed an extra image. The picture revealed an image of a woman dressed in Victorian styled clothing who stood behind the bride and groom. No one was physically present at the time of the photo except for the bride and groom. The transparent image appeared to be a ghostly figure.

There were also several reported episodes of spirit activity. Several guests reported seeing a ghostly figure in the bedroom and hallway on the second floor as well as conversations when no one was present. The Bed and Breakfast Inn owner invited Jane to sleep at the inn to investigate the inn for any discarnate entities cohabiting in the rooms with the guests.

Jane’s task was to sleep overnight in the "haunted room" on the second floor in the empty inn. This spirit "hot spot" did not seem unusual until Jane retired for the evening.

About 4:00 A.M. Jane awoke to the sound of a squeaking bed frame as she felt the vibration of someone sitting on the bed mattress. Her whole body tingled as she felt "someone" lay down next to her.

Startled Jane yelled, "Go away! I don’t want you here!" The ghostly presence retreated and Jane resumed her sleep. Two hours and the vibration of a person sitting on the bed awakened later Jane. Again she felt someone lay next to her. Only this time she knew it was a male spirit. He kept calling a woman’s name. Paralyzed by fear Jane hoped he did not think she was his wife.

This time Jane did not go back to sleep and instead listened and tried to determine who the spirit was. For the next few hours she audibly heard a conversation between a man and a woman which eventually escalated into a heated argument.

Jane determined the woman spirit captured in the photograph was a young woman servant preparing for marriage. She was supposed to marry a wealthy relative of the owners of the house. However, she died from a high fever before her wedding day. The wedding at the Bed and Breakfast triggered the spirit activity.

The original owners of the house are also spirits haunting the dwelling. This is an example of spirits who are not in confusion and are comfortable living among us in their own dimension. Jane did not attempt to remove them because she was only asked to determine who they were.

On two occasions a Philadelphia Inquirer reporter and photographer accompanied Jane to the haunted inn. There were several episodes of spirit activity. The writer heard a voice call her name, but there was no one present when she opened the door.

A presence was felt while they were sleeping in one of the rooms. During a séance at the inn at the stroke of midnight, an alarm clock on the inn’s second floor sounded. As the innkeeper ran up the steps to shut off the alarm a second alarm clock went off. Each time the alarm was shut off another one went off until a total of five alarm clocks had sounded. Coincidentally or not, there were five people present in the inn’s living room.
